Rice University Students Spend Spring Break Volunteering with Homeless in NYC

Image
A Break Well Spent After hours of studying for mid-terms and adding the final touches to projects, the most euphoric thing a college student looks forward to, is their spring break vacation. Many choose to indulge in the tranquility of warm beaches and enjoy cool, salty swims. Others opt for colder temperatures, flying on skis at breakneck speeds. And some simply enjoy the cozy comforts of home. A break is a break though, no matter how one chooses to spend it. The same cannot be said for those participating in a different option offered by many schools, known as Alternative Spring Break (ASB). Students partaking in these programs sacrifice their vacation, and instead, choose to spend their week away from school learning about timely and significant social issues. This past week, about a dozen students from Rice University in Houston, Texas made the 1,600+ mile journey to New York City, to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between mental health ...

785 of Our Homeless Clients will Now Have Their Basic Needs Met Because of your support, the  Toiletry Drive was a huge success this year, bringing in well over 7,000 pieces of toiletries! Thanks to donations from our caring supporters, Colgate, DNA Public Relations, Hope and Comfort, Inc., and more, we have gathered thousands of toiletries that will be distributed to homeless clients all over New York City. The College of Mount Saint Vincent students, participants of the TRIO program, have volunteered at Susan’s Place for two consecutive years. Yesterday, in a race against time, they broke their own record and assembled 785 toiletry kits, surpassing last year’s goal! Thank you for continuing to support Care for the Homeless. Volunteers Complete 70-Foot Mural at Susan's Place

Image
After several months of planning and tireless hours of painting, volunteers unveiled a new mural at Susan's Place this past weekend. Covering 70 feet--spanning the length of the cafeteria at Susan's Place--this new mural, called "Moving Forward," was made possible through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity NYC's Brush with Kindness program. Are you interested in volunteering your creative talents for Care for the Homeless? Contact Angela Petriello at volunteerservices@cfhnyc.org or 212.366.4459 ext. 222 to learn more. Follow the mural's progress below: We thank all the volunteers who helped beautify this space. Susan's Place is a 200-bed residence for homeless women. Since opening in 2008, over 1 million meals have been served in this cafeteria.

On International Women's Day, we celebrate the sixth anniversary of Susan's Place.

Volunteer Game Festival is a Success!

United Talent Agency and CFH Volunteer Services hosted the first of many Game Festivals last Friday, July 26th at Susan's Place, our transitional residents for homeless women. The event was called Lunch n' Games, and the group of 12 volunteers seeking some team building through service, spent the afternoon serving lunch and playing board games with the woman of Susan's Place.  The volunteers discovered, amongst the many boardgamers; chess geniuses, Spades masters, scrabble wizzes and more.  At the end of the day UTA presented Bingo complete with prizes and a donation of board games for future game festivals at Susan's Place. The June Toiletry drive was a success, pulling in thousands of toiletry supplies!  Wednesday, The TRIO youth group of The College of Mount Saint Vincent visited Susan's Place to assemble over 700 toiletry kits, to be delivered to our sites across New York City. CFH Volunteer Services off to a running start!

In April, Care for the Homeless introduced the new Volunteer Services, where New Yorkers who are housed are connected to those who are homeless in an incredible service learning experience. Volunteer individuals have joined the team for long term recurring volunteer positions.  Classic Re-runs, our boutique at Susan’s Place for res...

Feeling like a family at Ward's Island

Image
Volunteers team up with CFH Social Services staff to hand out healthy BBQ choices such a turkey hot dogs, turkey burgers and fresh fruit. On Wednesday, July 10th, Care for the Homeless' Social Services, Health Education and Program Evaluation departments joined together with a group of CFH volunteers to have a summer BBQ and wellness event at the  HELP Supportive Employment Center - Wards Island men's shelter. A total of 65 residents participated and most of the men did one or two health screenings as well as learned the value of healthy eating choices.  Case Manager Training Specialist Anisha Perez-Miller organized the event and said, "I can tell that the men felt like they were part of the CFH family. Today, I got so much feedback from both the staff and clients stating what a wonderful event it was. They are requesting another one which proves that we all provided a great service to the clients." This success is being found with our Social Service team...
