785 of Our Homeless Clients will Now Have Their Basic Needs Met Because of your support, the  Toiletry Drive was a huge success this year, bringing in well over 7,000 pieces of toiletries! Thanks to donations from our caring supporters, Colgate, DNA Public Relations, Hope and Comfort, Inc., and more, we have gathered thousands of toiletries that will be distributed to homeless clients all over New York City. The College of Mount Saint Vincent students, participants of the TRIO program, have volunteered at Susan’s Place for two consecutive years. Yesterday, in a race against time, they broke their own record and assembled 785 toiletry kits, surpassing last year’s goal! Thank you for continuing to support Care for the Homeless. After several months of planning and tireless hours of painting, volunteers unveiled a new mural at Susan's Place this past weekend. Covering 70 feet--spanning the length of the cafeteria at Susan's Place--this new mural, called "Moving Forward," was made possible through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity NYC's Brush with Kindness program. Since opening in 2008, over 1 million meals have been served in this cafeteria.

The path out of homelessness often starts with one simple question: what happened—why are you homeless? For Ebony, a 22-year old college student and resident of Susan’s Place, our shelter for women in the Bronx, answering that question was both liberating and empowering. “I am homeless because when I moved back to NYC from California to take care of my Mom who is sick, I was under the assumption my Section 8 housing voucher was transferable.” Ebony is not alone. The 2013 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reports 10% of all homeless people in the United States were 18-24 years old.  Four months ago, Ebony moved in Susan’s Place, where she says: “I don’t feel like a number, I got my humanity back.” Working with a Care for the Homeless housing liaison, just this week, Ebony has gone on several housing interviews, and she received word that she will be moving into an apartment soon. This March, Susan's Place turns six! Please join Care for the Homeless as we mark the anniversary of the opening of our 200-bed transitional shelter for mentally ill and medically frail homeless women in the Bronx. Services at Susan’s Place include transitional shelter for 6 to 9 months, meals, personalized case management, on-site medical and dental clinics, psychiatry, group and individual therapy, health education workshops and screenings, computer literacy, government benefits enrollment and advocacy, housing placement assistance, job counseling and self-efficacy programming. Six years. Over 438,000 nights of shelter provided. Over 1 million meals served. Since we opened, over 900 women have moved from Susan's Place into permanent housing. In April, Care for the Homeless introduced the new Volunteer Services, where New Yorkers who are housed are connected to those who are homeless in an incredible service learning experience. Within only three months, volunteer services has welcomed John Jay: College of Criminal Justice, The College of Mount Saint Vincent, New York University, United Talent Agency, Children of Promise NYC and several other New York City groups and organizations to serve at our sites and join our cause to end homelessness.   Volunteers have been involved in almost every facet of our mission such as  walking with us in advocacy during the 2013 AIDS Walk, staffing our health fairs, hosting clothing and toiletry drives and assembly dates, staffing our wellness barbecues and leading our recreational events such as game day at Susan’s Place. When you think of the Director of Operations at a shelter, you don’t typically imagine a Wall Street broker/DJ working with homeless women on a daily basis, but at Susan’s Place, that’s exactly who Robert Bennett is. Raised in New York, Bennett has the “challenging” role of making sure everything at Susan’s Place is run as it’s supposed to, but he’s not bogged down by the challenge. “My favorite part of the day is any moment when I can make the women happy and make them smile.  They take to me,” he says. “I guess it’s the positive spirit I bring to them. I check on everything they need.” Bennett is in charge of more than just the facility at Susan’s Place. He also hosts open-microphone nights for the residents, oversees the gym and yoga classes, encourages the women to attend sewing and cooking classes and he utilizes his bookshelf full of DVDs and old-fashioned popcorn maker in his office for movie nights. “We wanted to change the mood by what they watch. Born the oldest of six, Kim grew up in Harlem. After high school, she became an addict. After years of moving from one family member’s couch to another, she knew she had to get help. Susan’s Place is the first shelter that Kim has been in and as she put it, “It’s the first and last.” She didn’t know what to expect when she arrived at Susan’s Place, but upon getting there, her life “changed tremendously.” “This place is beautiful. The atmosphere isn’t about thuggin' like it is in other shelters. The staff brings out the good parts of you. This place demands it of you.” After almost 18 months at Susan’s Place, Kim is moving out into permanent housing. “I never dreamed I’d be eligible for where I’m going,” she said. “This place has given me a sense of respect and self worth that I’ve never had before.” Over the past months, Kim has been managing the gym at Susan’s Place, ensuring the new equipment is taken care of and that the women at the shelter are able to be physically act...

The Delfonics gave the residents of Susan's Place something to cheer about on Wednesday March 18th. Performing their hits "La La (Means I Love You)" and "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," the trio sang, danced and entertained the ladies and staff in a free concert.
